Osram is originally a German lamp manufacturer , with its headquarters in Munich. The name comes from the Osram substances osmium and tungsten which have been used in the making of lamps. This name was used in 1906 , but the actual company Osram was established in 1919 .

The company has 49 factories in 19 different countries. Together with Philips Lighting , Osram and General Electric is on of the three largest lamp manufacturers in the world . Osram is a supplier of lighting for both the professional and consumer markets , and provides lamps for a variety of application areas such as office , shop, and home theater.
